Robertson was born in Hamilton, Ontario and attended Hillfield Strathallan College, a local private school. She started taking acting classes when she was ten and had roles in local theater productions.

Career

From 1990 to 1993, Robertson starred as Tina Edison, the eldest of three children of Dr. Fred Edison (Joe Flaherty), on the Canadian sitcom Maniac Mansion. This role earned her two nominations for Young Artist Awards. She appeared in several small films and television shows, and did not debut on the big screen until her small role in the 1992 thriller film Blown Away, opposite Corey Haim and Nicole Eggert. She also made her American debut in the 1992 made for television movie Quiet Killer, co-starring Kate Jackson.

In 1994, Robertson was cast in the series regular role of Clare Arnold in the Fox teen drama Beverly Hills, 90210. She starred in the show from 1994 to 1997, during seasons four to seven. In 1997, her ex-boyfriend, director Gregg Araki cast her as Lucifer, one of a group of bored, alienated, and very horny Los Angeles teens in the black comedy drama film Nowhere. She later had a role in his other film, called Splendor (1999). Robertson also has appeared in several films during her career. Робертсон получила широкую известность благодаря пользующемуся популярностью во всём мире сериалу «Беверли Хиллз 90210». Получив роль Клэр Арнольд в 1993 году, актриса не подразумевала задерживаться в этом телешоу на целых 4 года — её и приглашали всего на 5 серий. Но она так успешно вписалась в дружную молодёжную команду, что сразила всех поклонников телесериала.

В 1997 году Кэтлин обручилась с режиссёром Греггом Араки. В том же году она получила роль в картине Араки «Нигде». После работы в кинофильме «Нигде» Робертсон снялась в кинофильме: «Собачий парк» (1998 год) и, опять у Грегга Араки, в «Шикарная жизнь» (1999 год). Кроме этого Кэтлин совместно с Минни Драйвер игралась в кинофильме «Прекрасная», режиссёром которого была два раза оскароносная актриса Салли Филд. В сексапильной драме режиссёра Остина Чика «Логика измены» Робертсон сыграла одну из основных ролей совместно с Марком Руффало. Этот кинофильм был представлен в номинации «Лучший драматический фильм» на фестивале «Сандэнс».

За роль в кинофильме «Туловище: История Эвелин Дик», где Робертсон сыграла грустно известную канадскую убийцу Эвелин Дик, она была номинирована в категории «Лучшая актриса» на премии Gemini Awards в Канаде в 2002 году.

Робертсон снималась в сериале Дэвида Э. Келлей «Клуб девченок». Кэтлин вкупе с Биллом Мюрреем также появилась в комедии режиссёра Джона Макногтона «Побеседуем о сексе». В 2000 году Кэтлин развелась со своим супругом Греггом Араки, а в 2008 году вышла замуж за Криса Коулса (Chris Cowles) и у их 9 июля родился отпрыск, которого окрестили Уильям (William Robertson Cowles).

Робертсон играет главную роль в телесериале «Убийство первой степени», премьера которого состоится в 2014 году.
